Good downspout drainage in South Florida is less about the gutter and more about the last ten feet. A seamless gutter can collect every drop from a July cloudburst, but if the downspout dumps that water beside a slab foundation, onto a pool deck or across a sidewalk that grows algae, the system has only moved the problem a few feet. Southern Gutters FL plans where each downspout goes before we hang a single elbow.
We are a family-owned crew working out of our North Lauderdale shop since 2020. Some homes need nothing more than a longer extension or a splash block. Others need a downspout moved, a second outlet added, or the run carried underground to the swale. Here is how we figure out which.
Water pooling near the foundation: what the puddles tell you
Where the water collects usually points straight at the downspout responsible.
- Standing water against the slab an hour after a storm, often with a dark band on the stucco or base trim.
- Washed-out mulch or bare sand in a fan shape below an elbow, sometimes exposing sprinkler heads.
- A flooded patio or screened lanai because a downspout empties onto pavers that slope back toward the house.
- Green, slippery walkways where runoff crosses the same strip of concrete after every afternoon storm.
- Soft turf, ants and mosquitoes in one low spot, a sign the ground never dries out between storms.
- A neighbor's complaint that your roof water is crossing the property line.
Most South Florida houses sit on a concrete slab poured at grade. Repeated pooling wicks moisture into the base of the block wall, stains stucco, undermines pavers and drowns foundation plantings. None of it is an emergency, but it compounds every rainy season you leave it alone.

Why do South Florida yards struggle to absorb gutter water?
Our lots work against roof runoff in a few specific ways. The ground is flat, often built up only slightly above the street, and in much of Broward the water table sits close to the surface by late summer. Sandy soil soaks up water quickly when it is dry, then stops absorbing once weeks of storms have saturated it.
The roof adds to it. An inch of rain on a 2,000-square-foot roof produces roughly 1,250 gallons, and a hip roof covered in barrel tile funnels that volume into a handful of corners. Builders often installed one downspout per side to save material. Add a zero-lot-line neighbor a few feet away, a pool deck out back and a front swale the city controls, and there are not many good places left for that water.
Gutter drainage solutions, from splash blocks to buried pipe
There is no single right answer. We match the fix to how far the water needs to travel, what it has to cross and where it is allowed to end up.
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Splash blocks | Downspouts over lawn that already falls away from the house | Inexpensive, but only moves water a couple of feet; mowers knock them out of place |
| Downspout extensions | Carrying water four to ten feet past beds or a walkway | Visible on the lawn; hinged flip-up styles lift for mowing |
| Downspout relocation | An outlet that empties onto a patio, entry or the neighbor's side | Needs a new outlet in the gutter and sometimes re-pitching the run |
| Added downspout | Long runs or tile valleys that overflow in heavy rain | Requires wall space for the drop and a safe landing spot |
| Underground line | Water that must cross a yard, driveway or walk to reach the swale | Most labor; needs steady slope, a utility locate and occasional flushing |
| Rain barrel | Garden beds and potted plants close to a downspout | Fills in one storm, so its overflow still needs a safe route |
Plenty of homes end up with a mix: a relocated outlet on the back where the lanai floods, a buried line out front, and an extension on the side yard that flips up for the lawn crew.
Typical before

Typical after

Whatever the mix, each drainage job includes:
- A walk-around mapping each downspout, the roof feeding it and where it lands now
- A written estimate with one line per downspout, so you approve only what you want
- Sealing abandoned outlets and cutting new ones where water has a safe path
- Extensions, splash blocks, elbows and straps, color-matched where we can
- A hose test at every landing zone and haul-away of old parts

How we map yard drainage from gutters before recommending anything
A drainage estimate takes longer than a gutter quote because we study the ground as closely as the roofline. Here is what we look at on the visit.
- Roof area per outlet. We estimate how much roof drains to each downspout, watching for tile valleys and upper roofs that dump onto lower ones.
- Grade and low spots. We check which way the lawn, pavers and driveway actually fall, not how they were supposed to.
- Where water is allowed to go. Front swale, rear lake bank, side yard or a dry corner of the lot. We note HOA rules and any visible easements.
- Obstacles. Sprinkler lines, A/C pads, pool equipment, slab edges and tree roots all change the route.
- The downspouts themselves. Crushed bottoms, loose straps and undersized 2x3 drops get folded into the same plan.
- Install and prove it. After you approve, we set ladders with standoffs, fit outlets, elbows and extensions, then run a garden hose through each gutter and watch every landing zone.
If an extension solves the problem, that is what we recommend. We do not push buried pipe where a splash block will do the job.

Downspout relocation, buried lines or barrels: which service fits?
Carrying water across the yard
When runoff has to travel twenty feet or more, or cross a walkway, we bury it. Underground downspout drainage is the work our reviewers praise most: solid pipe pitched to a pop-up emitter or the swale, laid shallow enough to cope with the high water table.
Fixing, moving or adding the downspouts
Undersized, crushed or badly placed downspouts cause a lot of pooling on their own. Our downspout installation and repair service covers relocation, extra outlets, upgrades to 3x4 drops and new straps set into the block.
Saving some of the water
Gardeners can capture the first part of each storm with a rain barrel installation that uses a diverter, so the rest of the water keeps flowing down the existing downspout.
Sometimes the answer is simpler still. A downspout packed with sand and seed pods only needs downspout cleaning and flushing before anything gets rebuilt. We handle drainage across Broward, including Fort Lauderdale, Plantation and Sunrise.

What drives the price of a downspout drainage project?
We do not publish prices, because two houses on the same street can need completely different work. Your written quote is built from these factors:
- How many downspouts are involved and whether new outlets must be cut into the gutter
- Length of any extension or buried run, and whether it crosses pavers, concrete or roots
- Downspout size (standard 2x3 or larger 3x4) and color match to the existing gutters
- Story height and roof type, since tile roofs and two-story walls take more setup
- Restoring sod, mulch or pavers after trenching
- Haul-away of old downspouts, cracked splash blocks and debris
For buried lines in particular, our guide to underground drainage cost factors goes into more depth.
Timing matters too: extensions and most relocations finish the same visit, while buried lines wait for Sunshine 811 marks and usually take a day. Drainage coverage is written into the estimate; our 3-year/20-year warranty covers gutter installations.
Who decides where your roof water is allowed to go?
More people than most homeowners expect. The termite-protection section of the Florida residential code calls for roof downspouts to discharge at least a foot from the sidewall, a floor rather than a goal. Your city or county controls the grassy swale by the street, and many South Florida cities require a permit before anyone pipes into, regrades or paves it. Water may not be aimed at a neighbor’s lot, a sidewalk or a septic drain field, Florida law requires a Sunshine 811 locate before digging, and HOAs often review visible extensions and emitters. For trenching work, ask any contractor for license details and a certificate of insurance.
Why call Southern Gutters FL about drainage?
Underground drainage is one of the jobs our Google reviewers mention by name. Chance has run the company since about 2020, first out of West Palm Beach, then Oakland Park, now North Lauderdale, so we know how flat lots drain from Jupiter to Hollywood. Across 54 reviews averaging 4.9 stars, customers tag us most for quality, value and responsiveness, and several mention gates closed behind us for the dogs, which matters when the work is in your back yard. Estimates are free and written, the scope lists every downspout by location, and a follow-up call comes once the job is done.

“After receiving three quotes, I went with Chance. Chance and his crew were all professional, arrived on-site to complete the project as promised. All the gutter and downspouts were meticulously done. Chance also did an incredible job of routing all of the run-off underground and away from my home. 10 star is a better rating for this guy.”
“Had new seamless gutters installed due to previous installation being done improperly and causing water damage. Chance fixed the issues with new appropriately sized seamless gutters that look super clean and even added some underground drainage to get the water away from the house where it was pooling. Highly recommend. Pricing was competitive after several other quotes.”
“Installed seamless gutters all the way around the house w/ 8 downspouts. Great looking work and attentive to the little details around the corners and painting any cut/exposed edges as he went.”
Downspouts & Drainage questions, answered
Where should downspouts discharge on a South Florida lot?
Onto your own property, several feet from the slab, on ground that falls away from the house and can soak the water in, or into the street swale where your city allows it. Water should never be aimed at a neighbor's yard, a public sidewalk or a septic drain field. On a tight zero-lot-line home, that often means a buried line to the front swale or an emitter in open lawn.
Can you move a downspout that floods my patio?
Yes. We seal the old outlet, cut a new one where the water has a safe path, and adjust the gutter's pitch if needed so it drains toward the new drop. If that side of the house has no good landing spot, we can carry the water around the patio in a buried line instead. Either way, the patio stops being the discharge point.
How many downspouts does my house need?
It depends on roof area, pitch and how much water each gutter run collects, not just length. A common starting point is one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, with extra outlets near tile valleys. Many South Florida homes were built with too few, which is why their gutters overflow in summer storms even when they are clean.
Do you handle drainage from neighbor complaints?
We do. We look at where each of your downspouts currently discharges, show you which ones send water toward the property line, and quote a fix such as relocating the outlet, turning an extension back onto your lot or piping the water to the street swale. If an HOA is involved, the written quote gives the board a clear scope to review.
