Downspout cleaning is the part of gutter work many crews skip, and in South Florida it is often exactly where the clog lives. A gutter can be spotless and still overflow at the corner because the outlet below is packed with palm seed, black olive leaves and Cuban tree frogs. Water has one way down; close it and the water goes over the side.

We clear downspouts by flushing, snaking or taking the elbows apart, depending on what is stuck and where. Lines buried out to a pop-up emitter in the lawn get flushed from both ends when we can reach them. Then we run water until it pours out the bottom at full volume, because a downspout that only trickles is still clogged.

Downspout work is part of every gutter cleaning visit we do, and it is also booked on its own when one corner keeps flooding the flower bed. Our North Lauderdale crews cover Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade.

Signs you need clogged downspout repair, not just a cleaning

Most homeowners spot a downspout problem from the ground during a storm. These are the giveaways:

  • Water spilling over the gutter right at the corner or outlet while the rest of the run stays calm.
  • A downspout that drips, or stays dry, in a downpour.
  • Gurgling, or a dull thump when you tap the lower section, which points to a packed column of debris.
  • Pop-up emitters in the lawn that never rise, or soggy ground along a buried line.
  • Elbow seams bulging, or a downspout pulling away from its straps under the weight of wet debris.

On a slab home in central Broward, the first hint is often a mulch bed washed out under one corner while the other drops run fine. With buried lines, it is a strip of St. Augustine that stays soggy days after the storm. Overflow that starts almost as soon as the rain does usually means the drop is nearly closed.

If a downspout is dented, split or torn free, cleaning will not fix it. That is a job for our downspout installation and repair crew, and we can usually handle both on one trip.

What packs a South Florida downspout?

Downspout clogs come from debris smaller than what fills the gutter: anything that can roll or wash into the outlet, then jam at the first bend.

  • Black olive leaves. Tiny and waxy, they slip through the outlet and stack like shingles inside the elbow.
  • Palm seed. Royal and queen palm seeds roll to the low point of the trough, which is the outlet.
  • Roof grit. Shingle granules and sand from tile mix with leaf mush into something close to wet mortar.
  • Tree frogs and wasps. Damp, shaded downspouts are prime shelter; frogs pile in, and mud daubers build in the dry stretches.
  • Leftovers from a re-roof. Screws, nail strips and tile chips turn up in elbows surprisingly often.

Downspout unclogging: flush, snake or take it apart?

We start with the gentlest method and step up only when it fails. Each option has a place:

Downspout clog removal methods compared
MethodWorks best forLimits
Hose flush from the gutter outletLoose leaves and silt in a straight dropCan drive a packed plug tighter into the elbow
Back-flush from the bottomClogs sitting in the lower elbow or kick-outMessy, and needs a clear discharge path
Hand snake or drain augerCompacted seed or leaf plugs in tall dropsWill not open a crushed or kinked section
Remove the elbowsFrogs, nests and solid jams at the bendsTakes careful reassembly and fresh fasteners
Hand drain snake fed into the lower elbow of a clogged white downspout
A snake breaks up compacted seed and leaf plugs that a hose would only push tighter.

Most residential clogs clear with a flush and a snake. Opening a downspout is the last resort, and when we do it the joints go back together tight with stainless-steel screws so they do not rust-streak your stucco.

What a downspout cleaning covers

Booked on its own or added to a gutter cleaning, the scope is the same: every drop on the house gets tested, not just the one you noticed. A single plugged outlet usually means its neighbors are halfway there.

  • Clearing the gutter outlet and the trough around it.
  • A top-down water test on every downspout, with the result noted per drop.
  • Snaking, back-flushing or opening elbows that stall.
  • Flushing buried lines through to the pop-up emitter or swale outlet.
  • Re-fastening loose straps and photographing each outlet before and after.

Underground downspout cleaning without digging up the yard

Plenty of homes in Sunrise and Plantation pipe their downspouts underground to a pop-up emitter near the swale. Those lines collect sand and leaf silt at the low point, and on our high water table they can sit half full between storms.

When the emitter lifts and runs clear, the buried line between the downspout and the swale is open.

We flush from the downspout end, work the emitter open from the other side and run a longer snake for deeper plugs. If water still will not move, the pipe may be crushed by a car, invaded by roots or sloped the wrong way. Then the answer is opening that section, which our underground downspout drainage team handles.

Rules that apply once a buried line has to be dug

Flushing needs no permit, but excavation does come with rules. Florida’s Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act (Chapter 556, Florida Statutes) requires a call to Sunshine 811 before digging so buried utilities get marked. The grass swale in front of many Broward homes is usually city right-of-way, and some cities require a right-of-way permit to cut into it. If an HOA controls the common ground, its approval may be needed too. Local codes also bar tying downspouts into the sanitary sewer, and runoff should not be aimed at a neighbor’s lot. Installation work falls under the Florida Building Code and your city’s building department.

Tree frogs, wasps and iguanas in the drainage path

Cuban tree frogs move into downspouts by the dozen in summer, and their bodies plus the debris they trap can plug a 2x3 completely. A gentle rinse from the top usually sends them out the bottom on their own. When they are wedged in an elbow, we pull the elbow and clear it by hand.

Frogs and the debris they trap can close a smaller downspout completely, so the elbow sometimes has to come off.

Wasp and mud dauber nests come down from a safe distance first. Iguanas rarely climb inside, but their droppings wash down and feed clogs. Our article on keeping iguanas, frogs and wasps out of gutters covers prevention.

Our downspout flushing visit, start to finish

  1. Walk the house and note where every downspout discharges.
  2. Clear the gutter outlet and the first few feet of trough around it.
  3. Run water from the top and watch the bottom for full flow.
  4. Snake, back-flush or open the elbows on any that stall.
  5. Flush buried lines to the emitter and confirm it pops up.
  6. Re-secure loose straps and photograph each outlet before and after.

What sets the cost of downspout clog removal in South Florida

Pricing depends on how many downspouts you have, how many are buried, how tall the drops are and how hard the clogs are packed. The free written quote lists each one so you can see where the time goes.

Local variables move the time. Palm seed and tile grit set hard in an elbow and take longer than loose olive leaves, and a buried run to the swale takes more than a splash block, especially when the emitter is grown over. Two-story drops need taller ladder setups, and any elbow that has to come off adds reassembly. If the line turns out to be crushed, the repair is quoted separately so cleaning and digging never blur together.

Keeping downspouts flowing between visits

Three changes make the biggest difference. Upsizing a stubborn 2x3 downspout to a 3x4 gives debris more room to pass. A gutter maintenance plan catches packed outlets before the rainy season instead of during it.

Finally, point the discharge away from the slab, onto a splash block or into a buried line, so the water you just freed does not end up against the foundation. Our guide on where downspouts should drain walks through the options for yards, swales and driveways.

Typical before

Clogged downspout trickling onto a washed-out mulch bed with overflow stains above before downspout cleaning
Typical condition before downspout cleaning: a weak trickle at the elbow, a gouged mulch bed and overflow stains where the gutter spills instead.

Typical after

Cleared downspout sending a full stream onto a splash block beside a raked mulch bed after downspout cleaning
After cleaning: the gutter drains through the downspout again, and a full stream lands on a splash block away from the wall.

Why one stubborn downspout is still worth our trip

Plenty of companies pass on a one-downspout call. We take it, because that corner is usually where the water damage starts. Underground drainage comes up again and again in our 54 Google reviews, and customers tagged us for responsiveness 24 times and value 28 times on the way to a 4.9 average.

Chance has run the company since about 2020, and the crew works Monday through Friday from our North Lauderdale shop. Email a photo of the problem corner to [email protected] and we can usually tell whether it is a clog, a crushed line or a sizing issue before we arrive.

Downspout Cleaning questions, answered

Why do downspouts clog even when the gutters look clean?

Because the clog usually forms below the outlet, out of sight. Small black olive leaves, palm seed and roof grit slide through the gutter, then jam where the downspout turns at the first elbow. From the ground the trough looks clear, but water backs up the drop and spills at the corner. Running water through each downspout is the only reliable test.

Can you clear an underground downspout line without digging?

Usually, yes. We flush buried lines from the downspout end, open the pop-up emitter at the far end and use a drain snake on stubborn plugs of sand and leaves. Digging only comes up if the pipe is crushed, broken by roots or sloped backward, and we will show you why before recommending it.

How do you get tree frogs and nests out of downspouts?

We begin with a low-pressure rinse from the top, which flushes most tree frogs out the bottom unharmed. If they are wedged in a bend, we remove that elbow, clear it by hand and reattach it. Wasp and mud dauber nests are knocked down carefully before anyone reaches into an outlet.

How do I know if my downspout is clogged?

Watch it during a heavy rain. A clear downspout pours a strong stream at the bottom, while a clogged one drips, gurgles or stays dry as the gutter overflows near the outlet. Tapping the lower section helps too, since a packed downspout sounds dull rather than hollow. Soggy ground over a buried line is another clue.

Should I use a pressure washer to unclog a downspout?

No. High pressure can split the seams of a thin aluminum 2x3, pop elbow rivets and drive a seed plug deeper into a buried bend, and a wand aimed into corrugated pipe can tear it. We clear with ordinary hose flow and a hand snake, opening an elbow only when those fail.
