Downspout installation and repair is the small job that decides whether a gutter system actually works. A gutter can be perfectly pitched and spotless, but if its only outlet feeds a dented 2x3 drop held on by one loose strap, it will spill over the front edge in the first heavy afternoon storm. Southern Gutters FL fixes, replaces and adds downspouts on homes across South Florida, including on gutters someone else installed.

We take small jobs as readily as full installs, so you do not need to buy new gutters to get one downspout fixed. Our crew carries matching colors in both 2x3 and 3x4 sizes, and most repairs are finished in one visit. This service is part of our broader downspouts and drainage work.

Crushed downspout repair and the other damage we see most

Downspouts live at ground level, where everything happens to them. These are the repairs that fill our schedule:

Crushed or kinked bottoms

Riding mowers, string trimmers, ladders and landscaping trailers flatten the lower section and the shoe elbow. A crushed section chokes the flow and backs water up the pipe. We replace the damaged length, and where equipment passes every week, we fit a hinged extension that lifts out of the way.

Split seams and leaking elbows

Aluminum downspouts can split along the seam when debris packs inside and stays wet, and crimped joints between elbows loosen over time. Water then sprays across the stucco and leaves a dark stripe down the wall.

Drops pulling off the wall

Wind, a ladder leaned against the pipe or one corroded fastener can let a downspout swing free. In tropical-storm gusts a loose drop acts like a lever and can tear the outlet right out of the gutter.

What downspout installation and repair covers on a typical visit

Most calls involve one to three downspouts, and the visit is built around the water, not the metal. We check every outlet on that side of the house, because a crushed drop often hides a second problem a few feet away. If only the bottom is crushed, we replace that length and keep the rest; full replacement makes sense when seams have split in several places, the finish has chalked or you are upsizing. The written scope can include:

  • Replacing a crushed lower section or shoe elbow with matching color and size
  • Full drop replacement, including the outlet tube, elbows and straps
  • Cutting a new outlet so a long run or tile valley gets its own downspout
  • Upsizing outlets and drops from 2x3 to 3x4, sized to the roof area each one drains
  • Re-strapping loose drops into the block with stainless masonry screws
  • A splash block, hinged extension or buried line at the bottom

Typical before

Typical condition before downspout repair: a flattened shoe elbow, a dented lower section and a drop held by a single strap.

Typical after

After repair: a larger 3x4 drop fastened at every strap, with an open elbow that turns the water onto a splash block.

Why homeowners book us for a single downspout

Plenty of contractors will not drive out for one bent drop. We will, and our Google reviewers say so: they mention removal-only and small jobs we took on, cut edges painted, and a two-day job wrapped in one. Chance has owned Southern Gutters FL since about 2020, working out of West Palm Beach, then Oakland Park, and now North Lauderdale. Across 54 reviews averaging 4.9 stars, customers tag punctuality and responsiveness again and again, which counts when water is spilling off the corner. Estimates are free, written and itemized by downspout, and a follow-up call checks that every drop is draining.

Why do downspouts fail so often on South Florida houses?

Part of it is original construction. Many tract homes from the 1970s through the 2000s were built with 2x3 downspouts spaced far apart. They handle a gentle shower and fall behind in a summer cloudburst that drops an inch or more in under an hour.

The rest is environment. Black olive leaves, palm seed clusters and grit from aging shingles collect in the first elbow below the gutter. Sprinkler overspray keeps the lower section damp. Salt air near the Intracoastal pits low-grade fasteners, and concrete block walls need real masonry anchors, which some installers skip in favor of short screws that only grip the stucco skin.

We see these patterns on homes in Coral Springs, Lauderhill and Pompano Beach alike, and the fix is usually the same: right-size the downspout, anchor it properly and give its water somewhere safe to go.

2x3 or 3x4 downspouts: is the bigger size worth it?

A 3x4 downspout has roughly twice the opening of a standard 2x3, so it carries far more water and is much harder to block with a seed cluster or a wad of wet leaves. It is our default on new installs and on any outlet draining a tile roof valley.

Upsizing means cutting a larger outlet into the gutter and hanging new elbows, so it is most economical when downspouts are being replaced anyway. If the gutters themselves are too small for your roof, our page on 6-inch and 7-inch oversized gutters covers the next step up.

When to add a downspout to an existing gutter run

An extra outlet is often the most economical way to stop a long gutter from overflowing. We look for these signs:

  • A gutter run of roughly 35 to 40 feet or more with only one outlet
  • A roof valley pouring into the middle of a run, far from any downspout
  • Water jumping the gutter at the same spot every storm while the rest stays calm
  • An outlet whose water floods a patio, an entry or the neighbor's side

To add one, we cut a clean opening in the gutter bottom, rivet and seal a new outlet, then hang the elbows and drop and strap them to the wall. If the gutter was pitched entirely toward one end, we re-hang part of it so the water splits between both outlets. Where the new drop lands matters, so we pair it with an extension or an underground drain line when the ground calls for it.

Downspout straps and fasteners that hold through hurricane season

A downspout is only as secure as what holds it to the house. On block-and-stucco walls we drive stainless-steel masonry screws through each strap into the block itself. Straps go near the top, at each elbow and along the run, spaced closer on two-story drops that catch more wind.

Before storm season we find plenty of drops hanging by a single strap. Resetting them is quick, and it is the kind of small job other companies turn down. If you are getting ready for a storm, our pre-hurricane gutter prep visit includes a strap check on every downspout.

Codes, HOA color rules and who should do the work

Like-for-like downspout repair rarely involves a permit, but a new gutter system can, depending on the city. Broward and Miami-Dade sit in the Florida Building Code’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, where wind-load rules shape how gutter and downspout hardware is fastened, and some products need Miami-Dade product approval (an NOA). Many HOAs in planned communities require downspout colors that match the approved trim, so check before upsizing to a bulkier 3x4. Florida’s DBPR licenses contractors for installation work; before anyone drills into your block, ask any company for its license details and a current certificate of insurance.

How a downspout repair visit works, and what affects the quote

  1. We set ladders with standoffs and run a garden hose through each gutter to see which outlets struggle.
  2. Damaged sections, loose straps and leaking joints are pointed out to you before any work starts.
  3. Old pieces come off, the outlet is cleared or resized, and new sections are cut to length on site.
  4. Every joint is crimped, riveted and sealed, and straps go into the wall with stainless hardware.
  5. We flush the finished downspout with the hose, watch where it lands, and haul away the old metal.

Price depends on how many downspouts need work, story height, whether new outlets are cut, 2x3 versus 3x4, color, and what happens at the bottom: a splash block, an extension or a buried line. Downspouts installed as part of a new seamless gutter system carry our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty; standalone repairs list their coverage in the written estimate.

Access adds to it. A two-story drop needs a taller ladder setup, a downspout behind a hedge or over a pool deck takes longer, and an abandoned outlet hole must be patched and sealed. Color matters too, since we match the existing gutters from a wide range of colors rather than defaulting to white. Hardware choice is not a variable, because every strap gets stainless screws. Most repairs and added outlets are finished in one visit, so the quote rarely includes return trips.

What customers say about our downspout installation & repair work

4.9 average from 54 Google reviews · Read all reviews

“After receiving three quotes, I went with Chance. Chance and his crew were all professional, arrived on-site to complete the project as promised. All the gutter and downspouts were meticulously done. Chance also did an incredible job of routing all of the run-off underground and away from my home. 10 star is a better rating for this guy.”

Kenneth Ball · Google review, 2023

“Had new seamless gutters installed due to previous installation being done improperly and causing water damage. Chance fixed the issues with new appropriately sized seamless gutters that look super clean and even added some underground drainage to get the water away from the house where it was pooling. Highly recommend. Pricing was competitive after several other quotes.”

D B · Google review, 2022

“Installed seamless gutters all the way around the house w/ 8 downspouts. Great looking work and attentive to the little details around the corners and painting any cut/exposed edges as he went.”

Downspout Installation & Repair questions, answered

Can you add a downspout to an existing gutter?

Yes, on almost any aluminum gutter, including ones another company installed. We cut a new opening, rivet and seal an outlet, and run a color-matched drop down the wall. If the gutter was pitched toward a single end, we adjust it so water reaches both outlets. You do not need to replace your gutters to get an extra downspout.

Should I upgrade to 3x4 downspouts?

If you have a tile roof, a long gutter run, 6-inch gutters or a downspout that keeps clogging, usually yes. A 3x4 drop has about double the opening of a 2x3 and passes seed pods and leaves that would jam the smaller size. On a small porch roof a 2x3 is often still enough, and we will tell you so.

Why does my downspout overflow at the top?

Most often the first elbow under the gutter is packed with leaves, sand or a palm seed cluster, so water backs up and spills over the outlet. Other causes are an outlet that is too small, too much roof draining to one downspout, or gutter pitch sending everything one way. We clear it and tell you which cause it was.

Do you fix downspouts crushed by lawn equipment?

All the time. We replace the crushed section and shoe elbow with matching material rather than hammering it back into shape. For downspouts that mowing crews hit every week, a hinged extension that flips up, a shorter outlet elbow or a buried line moves the bottom of the pipe out of harm's way.
