The right guard depends on what falls on your roof. Palm fronds, narrow black olive leaves, oak tassels and pine needles all behave differently on a gutter cover, and a product that works under one tree can clog fast under another. Southern Gutters FL chooses gutter guards for South Florida homes by looking up first, at the canopy, before recommending anything.

We install guards on new gutters and on existing ones that are in good shape. We will also be straight with you about the trade-off: guards cut down on cleanings and keep the trough flowing, but no guard makes a gutter maintenance-free under a black olive or a row of queen palms.

Gutter screens, covers and micro-mesh: comparing the leaf guards

Most guards fall into a handful of designs. Each blocks a different size of debris, and each has a weak point worth knowing before you buy.

For most homes under mixed trees, we end up recommending fine mesh. Our micro-mesh gutter guards page covers how that design handles heavy rain, wind and the small debris our area produces.

What are the best gutter guards for palm trees, black olives and oaks?

Big debris is the easy part. A dead palm frond lands on top of almost any guard and sits there until it blows off or someone removes it. The hard part is the small stuff that slips through or sticks.

  • Black olive. Small, narrow leaves and tiny seeds fall nearly year-round and wedge into coarse screen holes. Fine mesh keeps them on the surface where rain and wind can move them.
  • Palms. Fronds rest on any guard, but flower stalks and seed clusters break apart into pieces small enough to clog a screen. Palms close to the roof are also worth trimming; our palm frond debris removal service handles both.
  • Live oak. Spring tassels and pollen form a thin mat on any surface. Mesh still keeps them out of the trough, but the top needs an occasional brush.
  • Pines. Needles spear straight through screens and reverse-curve gaps. Only fine mesh reliably stops them.

Can guards go on the gutters you already have?

Often, yes, as long as the gutters are worth protecting. A guard adds weight and holds the gutter to a fixed shape, so loose hangers, low spots or leaking corners have to be fixed first. Putting a cover over a sagging run just hides the problem.

Roof type changes the method. On shingle roofs we prefer guards that fasten to the gutter lip and back rather than sliding under the shingles. Under barrel tile, the guard is fastened entirely to the gutter so no tile is lifted or walked on. On HOA-governed homes we can match guard frames to the gutter color, the same way we handle color-matched gutters.

On tile roofs the guard attaches to the gutter only, so no tile is lifted or walked on.

HOA approval, roof warranties and code questions

Guards rarely raise code questions on their own, but the work around them can. If new gutters go in with the guards, your city or county building department decides whether that installation needs a permit, and in Broward and Miami-Dade the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone rules apply to the roof edge. Many HOAs treat visible covers as an exterior change that needs architectural review, so get approval for profile and color first. Your roof manufacturer's warranty may restrict anything slid under shingles. For installation work, ask any contractor for DBPR or county competency details and proof of insurance.

Gutter guard installation, from first flush to final water test

A guard is only as good as the gutter under it, so an installation is really two jobs: getting the existing system clean, tight and draining, then fitting the guard so it stays put through summer squalls. Corners and outlets get the most attention, because that is where debris collects and where a poorly cut panel lets leaves slip in. Fewer open troughs also means fewer places for tree frogs, wasps and mosquito larvae to settle.

  • A tree-and-roof walk to match the guard to your debris
  • Full cleaning and downspout flush before any panel goes on
  • Hanger, joint and pitch corrections quoted line by line
  • Panels cut and fitted through miters and around every outlet
  • Screw fastening to the gutter, with frames color-matched where an HOA requires it
  1. We walk the property, note every tree and roof edge, and give you a written quote with guard options side by side.
  2. Gutters are cleaned and flushed, and downspouts are checked so the system starts clear.
  3. Hangers, joints and pitch are corrected where needed.
  4. Guard panels are cut to length, fitted through corners and around outlets, and screwed to the gutter.
  5. We run water across the guards to confirm rain passes through, then clean up and haul away debris.
  6. We follow up after the job to make sure everything is shedding the way it should.

A typical home is finished in a day. If you are replacing gutters at the same time, guards go on right after the new runs are hung.

A leaf filter alternative without the national-brand sales visit

Many homeowners call us after sitting through a long in-home pitch from a national guard company. We are not a dealer for any national brand. We are a local family-owned gutter company that sources guard products, installs them with our own crew and puts the price in a written quote you can take time to think over.

Chance has owned the company since about 2020, and our 54 Google reviews average 4.9 stars, with Value and Quality the tags customers choose most. There is no closing pressure at the kitchen table: the estimate is free, the quote is written, and we call after the job to check that rain is running through.

That also means honest advice about fit. If the gutters are undersized for the roof, a guard will not fix overflow; a larger gutter or an extra downspout will. If your trees drop very little, a regular cleaning schedule may cost you less than guards over time.

What shapes gutter guards cost, and what care comes after?

We quote guards by the job, not from a price sheet. The main factors are linear feet, the guard type, roof type, story height, the number of corners and outlets, color, and any cleaning or repairs needed before installation. The guide to gutter guards vs. cleaning plans walks through how to compare the two.

  • Footage and corners. Every miter and outlet needs a hand-cut panel, so a cut-up roofline takes longer than a straight ranch run.
  • Guard type. Fine stainless mesh on an aluminum frame costs more to supply than a perforated screen.
  • Roof and height. Barrel tile edges and second stories slow the fitting.
  • Prep work. Loose hangers, leaking joints or a packed trough are handled before guards go on.
  • Color. Matching frames to bronze, white or another gutter color for HOA rules can change the product choice.

When we install new gutters and guards together, the new gutters carry our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty; guard product coverage depends on the product you choose and is listed in your quote. For upkeep, our gutter guard cleaning service brushes and flushes guarded systems, including ones another company installed. We fit guards throughout Coral Springs, Plantation and the rest of Broward, where mature tree canopy is common.

Gutter Guards questions, answered

Which gutter guards work best with palm fronds and black olive leaves?

Fine stainless micro-mesh is usually the best match. Palm fronds sit on top of any guard and blow off or get removed, but black olive leaves and seeds wedge into coarse screen holes and slip past reverse-curve covers. Mesh keeps that small debris on the surface where wind and rain can move it, and it also stops pine needles.

Can guards be installed on my existing gutters?

Yes, if the gutters are in sound condition. We clean them, fix loose hangers, leaking corners and low spots, and then fasten the guards. If the gutters are corroded, undersized or badly bent, we will tell you, because guards on a failing system only hide the problem and make the next repair harder.

Do gutter guards void my roof warranty?

It depends on the guard and your roof warranty terms. Some designs slide under the first course of shingles, which certain roofing warranties may not allow. We prefer guards that fasten to the gutter itself without lifting shingles or tile. Check your roof warranty paperwork or ask your roofer, and we will show you exactly how the guard attaches.

How much do gutter guards cost per foot?

We do not publish a per-foot number because the guard type, roof type, story height, corners, outlets, color and any repairs needed beforehand all change the price. After a free estimate, you get a written quote that shows each option side by side, so you can compare mesh against screens on your own house.

Are gutter guards worth it in South Florida?

Often, yes, when trees overhang the roof. Under black olives, oaks or pines, guards cut the number of ladder trips and keep the trough flowing during afternoon cloudbursts. They are not worth it on an open lot with little debris, where two cleanings a year cost less. Either way, guards still need a brush-off and a check after named storms.
