Half-round gutters are the oldest gutter shape still in common use, and on the right house in South Florida nothing else looks as correct. The trough is a simple semicircle with a rolled bead along the front edge, carried on brackets and drained by round downspouts. It suits 1920s Mediterranean revival homes, Spanish eclectic cottages and newer estate houses designed to look like them.
We install half-round in baked-finish aluminum and in copper, and we size it up so the rounded profile can keep up with an afternoon cloudburst. It is one of the specialty options within our seamless gutter installation work, and every system carries a 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty.
What makes European style gutters different?
In Europe, half-round is still the default, which is why it is often sold as the European style. Three details set it apart from the K-style gutter on most Florida tract homes:
- The profile. A smooth semicircle with a bead rolled along the front lip, instead of the flat back and ogee face of K-style.
- The brackets. Half-round can hang on hidden hangers, but many owners choose exposed brackets that show beneath the trough as a design detail.
- The downspouts. Round, plain or corrugated, joined to the gutter through a drop outlet instead of a rectangular one.

The rounded bottom has a practical side too. With no flat floor or sharp inside corners, water drains out more completely between storms, and fine debris like black olive leaves tends to flush toward the outlets instead of settling in a corner.
Historic home gutters: where half-round belongs
Most half-round calls start with one of four complaints: a 1920s–1950s house wearing flat-faced K-style that never suited it; an old sectional half-round system dripping at every dried-out coupling; steel brackets rusted through in salt air, letting the trough sag and spill over the bead; or a preservation board or HOA asking for a period-correct profile.
Some of the most rewarding half-round jobs are on older homes where the original gutters were long ago swapped for something generic. In Fort Lauderdale’s Sailboat Bend neighborhood, in Boca Raton’s Old Floresta, and across Coral Gables, the architecture dates to the 1920s and 1930s, and a rounded gutter is part of putting the house back the way it was meant to look.

If your home sits in a locally designated historic district, exterior changes can require a certificate of appropriateness from the city’s preservation board. Gated communities in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale may also need HOA sign-off. We supply profile drawings, color or metal samples and a layout for either review before any work is scheduled.
Who approves the change depends on the address. Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Coral Gables each have a historic preservation board that reviews exterior alterations to designated properties, so check with city preservation staff first. In Broward and Miami-Dade, the Florida Building Code’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions govern exterior components, and gutter contractors are licensed through county boards. Ask any installer, us included, for county competency details and a certificate of insurance.
What is included when we install half-round gutters?
A half-round job from us covers the full drainage path, not just the trough seen from the street. The written estimate lists every part by elevation, so you can see where the rounded profile goes and where, if you choose, a matching K-style takes over on a back wall.
- Removal and haul-away of the old gutters, spikes and any rusted steel hangers
- A 5-inch or 6-inch half-round trough in aluminum or copper, sized to the roof area of each run
- Hidden hangers or exposed decorative brackets in a matching finish, fastened with stainless-steel screws
- Drop outlets, end caps and inside or outside miters at every corner
- Round plain or corrugated downspouts in 3-inch or 4-inch diameter, with elbows and wall straps
- A hose flow test, painted cut edges and a full cleanup before we leave
Underground drain lines are optional and priced separately. Soft fascia found under the old gutters is photographed and discussed with you before the quote changes.
Half round aluminum gutters or copper?
| Aluminum half-round | Copper half-round | |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Baked enamel in white, bronze, almond and other colors | Natural metal that darkens and patinas |
| Joints | Couplings sealed and riveted | Soldered seams |
| Salt air | Good with rinsing and painted cut edges | Excellent; patina protects the metal |
| Relative cost | Lower | Considerably higher |
Aluminum is the practical choice for most homes and lets you match the trim; see our color-matched gutters page for finishes. Copper is the choice when the gutter is meant to be a feature, and our copper gutters page covers leader heads and patina in detail.
Round downspouts, drop outlets and keeping up with summer storms
A half-round trough holds less water than a K-style gutter of the same width. In a climate where summer storms can dump an inch of rain in well under an hour, we usually step up a size: where a house might get 5-inch K-style, it gets 6-inch half-round. Tile roofs, which shed water fast and overhang the gutter, almost always get the larger size.
Downspouts do the rest. Round downspouts come in 3-inch and 4-inch diameters, and we lean toward 4-inch on tile roofs and long runs. A drop outlet soldered or riveted into the trough feeds each one, and we add outlets rather than ask one downspout to drain an entire wall. Our half-round vs. K-style comparison goes deeper on capacity.

Half round gutter installation, bracket by bracket
- Settle the details. Material, bracket style, color, outlet locations and any board or HOA conditions are agreed at the estimate.
- Take the old system down. Gutters, spikes and hangers come off, and the fascia or rafter tails are checked before anything is fastened.
- Snap the pitch line. A chalk line sets a fall of about a quarter inch per 10 feet toward each outlet, and every bracket is marked on it.
- Hang and join the trough. From ladders with standoffs, each length drops into its brackets; aluminum couplings are sealed and riveted, copper seams soldered.
- Fit outlets and round downspouts. Drop outlets are cut in and downspouts strapped to the wall, discharging to a splash block, lawn or buried line.
- Test and clean up. A hose run proves each section drains, cut edges are painted, gates are latched and walks are swept.
Layout
We snap a pitch line along the fascia and mark every bracket, closer together than on a K-style system because the bracket is what holds the round trough in shape. On homes with exposed rafter tails and no continuous fascia, brackets go on a backing board fastened to the tails.

Finishing
End caps, outlets and round downspouts go on last, then a hose test and a full cleanup. Downspouts can tie into underground drainage so water leaves the yard instead of pooling at the foundation.
Quote factors and warranty on a half-round system
Half-round costs more than standard K-style, mainly because of the profile, the brackets and the extra labor in joining lengths. Your written quote reflects material (aluminum or copper), bracket style, linear feet and corners, the number and diameter of downspouts, stories, tile access and removal of the old gutters. Every installation carries our 3-year workmanship warranty and 20-year materials warranty.
Bracket count matters more here than on a standard system. Brackets sit closer together than K-style hangers and decorative ones cost more than hidden ones, so a long eave adds up. A 6-inch trough, extra drop outlets, 4-inch round downspouts and copper soldering time each add a line.
One way owners manage the budget is to put half-round on the street-facing elevations, where the profile is seen, and standard K-style in a matching color on the rear and side walls that face a fence or pool cage. The two profiles meet at a corner with a transition piece, and from the curb the house reads as half-round.
Why owners hand us a half-round project
Half-round is unforgiving: a bracket a little off line shows from the curb. Quality is the tag our Google reviewers picked most, 29 times across 54 reviews, and one review singles out cut edges painted as the crew went. Chance has run Southern Gutters FL as a family company since about 2020. Expect a free written estimate, gates latched behind the crew, a follow-up call once the job is done, and the 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty on every new installation.

“Southern Gutters FL is an outstanding company, from start to finish. Contacted them on a Sunday thinking that I would not get a response till Monday, wrong received text from them shortly after leaving message. I explained my issue provided photos and architectural rendering received detailed response with what would be needed to correct a poor installation from another gutter company in this area and me playing Bob Villa which I don't recommend "I completely pulled the gutters out and off the house well mostly off some was still hanging" 😭🤪 and a quote for service and they installed two days later making my back yard perfect for the 4th of July weekend. First two photos was my Handy work 🤯 the next two are after Southern Gutter was finished with perfect installation and gutters that actually drain.”

Half-Round Gutters questions, answered
Are half-round gutters as effective as K-style?
They are effective when they are sized correctly. Width for width, half-round holds less water than K-style, so we usually install a size larger and add outlets with 4-inch round downspouts. Sized that way, a half-round system handles South Florida summer storms well, and its rounded bottom drains more completely between rains.
Do half-round gutters come in aluminum or only copper?
Both. Aluminum half-round comes in baked enamel colors such as white, bronze and almond, and it is the choice for most homes because it costs less and can match your trim. Copper half-round is the premium option for homes where the gutter is meant to be seen and allowed to weather naturally.
Which homes look best with half-round gutters?
Homes with rounded architectural details look best: Mediterranean revival and Spanish eclectic houses with barrel tile roofs, 1920s and 1930s cottages in historic neighborhoods, and newer estate homes built in those styles. On a flat-faced modern home with a wide fascia, K-style usually looks cleaner, and we will say so at the estimate.
Do half-round gutters cost more?
Yes. Half-round is more expensive than standard K-style in the same material because the profile, the brackets and the joining work all add cost, and copper half-round costs considerably more than aluminum. Your written quote breaks out material, brackets, downspouts and labor so you can see exactly where the difference comes from.
How far apart should half-round gutter brackets be?
Closer than most people expect. Manufacturer guidance for half-round generally caps spacing near 36 inches on center, and many installers work nearer 24. We stay well inside that maximum, tighter under barrel tile, because the bracket keeps the round trough from spreading. Exposed brackets must also line up perfectly, so spacing is measured, never eyeballed.

Half-Round vs. K-Style Gutters
K-style carries more water and fits most Florida homes; half-round suits historic and Mediterranean architecture. A side-by-side look at capacity, mounting, cost factors and looks.

Aluminum vs. Copper Gutters for Palm Beach Homes
Copper ages into a living patina and lasts for generations; painted aluminum is lighter, color-matched and far more economical. How the two compare on looks, lifespan, salt air and cost factors.
