Copper gutters in Palm Beach County are usually about architecture first. A Mediterranean revival house with a barrel tile roof, arched loggias and wrought iron looks unfinished with plain aluminum under the eaves, and copper is the material those homes were drawn around. It also happens to be one of the best metals for salt air.
We install copper half-round and K-style gutters, copper leader heads and round or rectangular copper downspouts for homes from Palm Beach and Boca Raton down through Broward. Seams and corners are soldered, not caulked, and the job carries the same 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty as every seamless gutter installation we do.
Which homes suit copper gutter installation?
Copper belongs on houses where the gutter is part of the design rather than something to hide. Architect Addison Mizner’s 1920s Mediterranean revival work set a style that still shapes Palm Beach and Boca Raton, and newer estate homes borrow heavily from it: clay or concrete barrel tile, deep overhangs, stucco in sand and cream tones, and copper accents at the roof edge.

We see the most copper requests around Boca Raton and Delray Beach, plus waterfront homes in Broward where aluminum near the Intracoastal has aged poorly. If a full copper system is more than you want, copper downspouts or leader heads paired with a matching gutter can deliver much of the look.
Signs an existing copper system needs attention
Older copper usually tells you where it hurts. Drips at a corner mean a solder joint has cracked, or that someone caulked a seam that should have been soldered. Green or dark streaks on the stucco below an outlet show copper runoff landing where it should not. A scupper pouring down the wall means a leader head is missing, and white powder on a nearby aluminum part means the two metals are touching. Any of these can trigger a partial or full replacement.
Architectural review, historic districts and code
In the Town of Palm Beach, the Architectural Commission (ARCOM) reviews exterior changes down to small items, so plan for its calendar. Boca Raton’s Community Appearance Board covers buildings other than single-family homes, while designated historic properties need a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Board. Palm Beach County sits outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone but is still high-wind territory, and Broward homes fall inside it. Whoever hangs the copper, ask to see their DBPR or county credentials and a certificate of insurance.
Copper half round gutters or K-style copper?
| Copper half-round | Copper K-style | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Classic, rounded; suits Mediterranean and historic homes | Crisper line that echoes crown molding |
| Capacity | Less per inch of width than K-style | More water per foot at the same width |
| Downspouts | Usually round | Usually rectangular |
| Mounting | Exposed decorative brackets or hidden hangers | Hidden hangers |
Most of our copper work is half-round, because that profile is what the architecture calls for. On a large tile roof we size up so the rounded trough still keeps up with summer storms. Our half-round gutters page compares the style in aluminum as well.

Copper leader heads and copper downspouts
A leader head is the box at the top of a downspout that collects water from a gutter outlet or a roof scupper. On flat-roofed wings and parapet walls, common on Mediterranean homes, the scupper pours into a leader head instead of splashing down the wall. A copper leader head turns that functional part into a detail that looks intentional.

Copper downspouts come round or rectangular, plain or corrugated, and are held with copper straps. We plan each discharge point carefully: water off copper carries traces of the metal and can tint light coral stone, pavers and pale stucco over time, so outlets go to drains, gravel or underground downspout lines rather than across a light patio. If scuppers on a flat section clog, our flat roof scupper cleaning service keeps them flowing.
How does copper weather in salt air and Florida sun?
New copper is bright penny-colored for only a short time. In our heat and humidity it darkens to a warm brown within months, then to a deep chocolate tone. The blue-green verdigris people picture develops much more slowly, often over many years, and tends to arrive sooner on homes close to the ocean.
That patina is a protective layer, which is why copper holds up so well in salt air. We don’t coat or paint it. The one thing copper does not tolerate is contact with aluminum or galvanized steel: water running off copper onto aluminum speeds corrosion of the aluminum, so we never drain a copper gutter onto an aluminum one and we keep the two metals physically separated where they meet.
Caring for copper
Copper still needs cleaning. Ficus leaves, palm boots and sea grape leaves sit in a half-round trough just as they do in aluminum, and standing wet debris can leave dark blotches on the metal. Keep it clean before rainy season, avoid scrubbing pads, and skip the polishes and lacquers sold for brightening copper; outdoors they wear off unevenly.
Soldered, not caulked: how we put copper up
A copper quote lists every part by name, because copper systems carry more pieces than aluminum. It specifies the profile and width, the sheet weight, each soldered corner and outlet, the hanger or bracket style, leader heads at any scupper, and downspout shape. It also shows where each downspout discharges and how copper will stay clear of any aluminum or galvanized part left on the house. Removal of the old gutters and a fascia check come first, and the work is covered by our installation warranty.
- Removal and haul-away of the existing gutters
- Copper runs set on copper or stainless hangers or brackets
- Soldered seams, end caps, outlets and corners
- Leader heads, round or rectangular downspouts and copper straps
- Discharge planned away from light stone, then a water test
Installation steps
- Confirm the profile, size and copper weight, and get any architectural board approval in hand.
- Remove the existing gutters and check the fascia for rot before anything is hung.
- Fit copper hangers or brackets, fastened with copper or compatible stainless hardware.
- Set each run on pitch, then solder seams, end caps and corners so they won’t dry out and leak the way sealant does.
- Add expansion joints on long runs, since copper moves noticeably between a cool morning and a hot afternoon.
- Install leader heads, outlets and downspouts, run water through the system, and clean up every scrap.

What shapes copper gutters cost?
Copper is a premium material, and its price moves with the metals market, so we quote it at the time of the estimate. Beyond material, the quote reflects copper weight (16-ounce sheet versus heavier 20-ounce), half-round versus K-style, how many soldered corners and seams the roofline needs, leader heads, downspout style, stories and tile access, and removal of the old system. Expansion joints on long runs, decorative brackets and any underground tie-in for the downspouts also count.

Why owners of estate homes call Southern Gutters FL
Chance took over this family company around 2020, when it was still based in West Palm Beach, so Palm Beach County rooflines were our first home territory. Professionalism is one of the review tags customers pick most, and on copper it shows in clean solder lines and a yard left free of scraps. We supply profile details for your board application, accept all four major credit cards, and call after the job to confirm every leader head drains.

His customer service skills went beyond any other competitors and i even made a point to refer all my neighbors to him. I will only trust this company moving forward to handle any gutter needs. Five stars.”
“Southern Gutters FL is an outstanding company, from start to finish. Contacted them on a Sunday thinking that I would not get a response till Monday, wrong received text from them shortly after leaving message. I explained my issue provided photos and architectural rendering received detailed response with what would be needed to correct a poor installation from another gutter company in this area and me playing Bob Villa which I don't recommend "I completely pulled the gutters out and off the house well mostly off some was still hanging" 😭🤪 and a quote for service and they installed two days later making my back yard perfect for the 4th of July weekend. First two photos was my Handy work 🤯 the next two are after Southern Gutter was finished with perfect installation and gutters that actually drain.”
“Showed up on time. Best quote that I received for seamless gutters - by far! Very professional crew and cleaned up after themselves. I’m very happy with the installation!”
Copper Gutters questions, answered
Do copper gutters hold up to salt air?
Very well. Copper forms a patina that protects the metal underneath, so it handles salt spray better than bare steel and outlasts painted finishes on many waterfront homes. The weak points are usually the fasteners and anything made of a different metal, which is why we use copper or compatible stainless hardware and keep copper from draining onto aluminum.
How long until copper gutters patina in Florida?
The bright shine fades fast. Most new copper turns brown within months in our heat and humidity, then deepens to a dark chocolate color. The green verdigris takes much longer, often many years, and it tends to come sooner close to the ocean. Exact timing varies with sun exposure, salt and how much rain each side of the house gets.
Can copper gutters be mixed with an aluminum system?
They can share a house, but not a water path. Water running off copper accelerates corrosion on aluminum, so a copper gutter should never drain into an aluminum gutter or downspout, and the two metals should not touch. A common approach is copper on the front elevation and aluminum on the back, each with its own downspouts.
Do HOAs or architectural boards approve copper gutters?
Many do, especially in communities with Mediterranean or estate architecture, but approval is never automatic. Some boards require every home to use the same gutter color or material. We provide product details, profile drawings and a layout for your application, and we schedule installation only after you have the approval letter in hand.
Are copper gutters worth it in South Florida?
For the right house, yes. On a Mediterranean or estate home where the gutter is part of the design, and near salt water where painted finishes wear fast, copper earns its cost. On a simple ranch it rarely does, and a bronze or brown aluminum system gets close to the look. Plan on owning the home long enough to enjoy the patina.

Aluminum vs. Copper Gutters for Palm Beach Homes
Copper ages into a living patina and lasts for generations; painted aluminum is lighter, color-matched and far more economical. How the two compare on looks, lifespan, salt air and cost factors.

Salt Air and Gutters on Coastal Homes
Salt spray rarely eats the gutter first. It goes after plated screws, steel hangers and mixed metals. What holds up on oceanfront and Intracoastal homes, and how to keep it that way.
