When gutters overflow in an emergency, it usually looks like this: an afternoon cloudburst rolls in, and instead of draining, the gutter over your front door turns into a waterfall. Water splashes against the threshold, soaks the stucco, and sometimes finds its way under the door or around a window frame.

Southern Gutters FL clears overflowing gutters across South Florida, with same-day visits when the schedule allows. We clear the blockage, then find out why it happened, because a gutter that overflows after a cleaning is telling you something different from one stuffed with black olive leaves. This page is part of our emergency and storm gutter repair service.

Water pouring over gutters: emergency or just a big cloudburst?

Even a well-sized, clean gutter can briefly spill at a roof valley during the heaviest few minutes of a South Florida storm. That is not an emergency. It becomes one when the overflow is steady along a whole run, when it is hitting a door or window, or when you see water inside.

  • Steady sheeting along the front edge: almost always a clog at the outlet or in the downspout.
  • A single waterfall at an inside corner: usually a valley overshooting the gutter, common on tile roofs.
  • Downspout silent while the gutter overflows: blockage in the elbow or the underground line.
  • Water at a door or under a window: the urgent kind; protect the interior first.

Overflow also leaves clues between storms. Look for a dark splash line on the stucco under one stretch of gutter, seedlings sprouting along the lip, a washed-out trench in the mulch bed, or a downspout that stays bone dry while the gutter above it spills. Any of those means the next cloudburst will find the same weak spot.

Water coming into the house from gutters: steps while it is still raining

  1. Stay off ladders while there is lightning or gusty wind. No clog is worth that.
  2. Lay towels at thresholds and slide furniture and rugs away from wet walls.
  3. Put a bucket under any ceiling drip and take a photo of the stain.
  4. If a downspout empties into a pipe at ground level, check whether the opening is covered by leaves or mulch and clear it by hand if you can reach it safely from the ground.
  5. Note exactly where the overflow is happening; that tells us where to look first.
  6. Once the storm passes, call us and describe the spot.

Interior water

Ongoing water inside walls or ceilings is a job for a water mitigation company as well. We handle the exterior cause; a mitigation pro handles drying the interior.

Clogged gutter emergency: what we usually pull out

The clog is rarely in the open trough. It is at the outlet or in the first elbow of the downspout, where debris has to turn a corner. In Broward and Palm Beach yards we find the same culprits over and over.

  • Black olive leaves compacted into a felt-like plug
  • Royal palm seed clusters and frond fibers caught across the outlet
  • Oak tassels and mahogany pods wedged in the elbow
  • Roof granules and sand settling at the low end
  • Mulch or soil blocking the inlet of an underground line

The first elbow is where debris has to turn a corner, so that is where most overflow clogs form.

Where a downspout feeds a buried pipe, the clog can be underground. Flushing from the top tells us quickly; if the water backs up, we work on the line through our underground downspout drainage service.

Same day gutter unclog: how the visit runs

We will not put a crew on ladders in lightning, so storm-day visits start once the cell has moved through. Light rain is actually useful, because it shows us exactly where water is going.

  1. Walk the house and confirm the overflow point you described.
  2. Clear the gutter trough by hand from the outlet outward.
  3. Flush the downspout from the top; snake the elbow if water backs up, as on our downspout cleaning and flushing visits.
  4. Run water through and watch both the outlet and the discharge at grade.
  5. Check pitch with the water still running and look for leaks at seams and corners.
  6. Explain the cause and, if there is a permanent fix, give you a written quote.

What an overflow call covers

The goal of the visit is simple: water leaves the roof, travels the gutter, drops through the downspout and exits where it should. That means working the whole path, not just scooping the trough over the front door. If the cause turns out to be design rather than debris, you leave with that diagnosis in writing and a separate quote, never an upgrade done without asking.

  • Hand-clearing the overflowing run and its outlet, with debris bagged and hauled
  • Flushing and, where needed, hand-snaking every downspout on that elevation
  • Checking the underground line inlet and pop-up emitter at grade
  • A hose test of pitch, seams and corners while water is running
  • Noting undersized 2x3 downspouts, missing valley diverters or too few outlets
  • Photos and a plain-English explanation of the root cause

Typical before

Before overflowing gutter service: rain spilling over a clogged gutter lip on a one-story stucco home
Typical condition before an overflow call: rain sheeting over the lip of a clogged run while the downspout below barely trickles.

Typical after

After overflowing gutter service: the same type of gutter run carrying rain to a flowing downspout
After an overflow service call: rain stays in the trough and pours out of the downspout instead of over the front edge.

Gutter overflowing in rain even when it is clean?

If we clear everything and the gutter still overflows during the next downpour, the system itself is the problem. These are the usual reasons and fixes.

Clean but still overflowing: causes and fixes
What happensLikely causeTypical fix
Waterfall at an inside cornerValley water overshooting the gutterValley diverter or splash guard
Steady spill along a long runToo few downspouts for the roof areaAdd an outlet and downspout
Spills even with flowing downspoutsGutter too small for roof areaUpgrade to 6" or 7" seamless
Water pools away from the outletBackward or flat pitchRe-pitch the run
Drip behind the gutter, not over the frontMissing drip edge or a seam leakDrip edge or leaking gutter repair

Upsizing is not always the answer. An extra downspout often solves it for less disruption. When the roof really outpaces the gutter, our oversized 6" and 7" gutters are the long-term fix.

Lightning, permits and HOAs: rules around an overflow fix

The National Weather Service rule is short: when thunder roars, go indoors, and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before heading back out. Our crews follow it on every storm-day call. Permanent fixes bring their own rules. Upsizing to new 6" or 7" gutters is new installation, which in Broward and Miami-Dade falls under the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone and may need a permit from your city building department. Many HOAs want architectural approval before gutter size, color or downspout locations change. Underground lines that run toward a city swale or right-of-way can need the city's sign-off first.

What decides the cost of an overflow call?

We do not list prices online. The written quote reflects how high the gutters are and what the roof is made of, how much debris is packed in, whether the clog is in an underground line, and whether a permanent fix such as re-pitching, an added downspout or a valley diverter is part of the job. Clearing and permanent upgrades can be quoted separately so you can stop at whichever makes sense.

In practice, a one-story shingle house with a single packed elbow is the short end of the scale. Two-story eaves, barrel-tile valleys that need careful footing, and a buried line full of sand all add time. Permanent fixes vary the most: swapping 2x3 downspouts for 3x4, adding an outlet on a long run, fitting a valley diverter or re-pitching a run each sit on their own line of the quote, so you can see which one actually stops the waterfall.

Overflowing Gutter Emergency Service questions, answered

Why are my gutters overflowing during heavy rain?

Most often a clog at the outlet or in the first downspout elbow, from black olive leaves, palm seed clusters or roof grit. Other causes are a buried drain line blocked or crushed, a run pitched the wrong way, valley water overshooting the gutter, or a gutter that is simply too small for the roof area feeding it.

Can overflowing gutters cause interior leaks?

Yes. Overflow that hits a door threshold, window frame or sliding door track can get inside, and water running behind a gutter soaks the fascia and can reach soffits and wall cavities. Repeated overflow at one spot also saturates soil against the foundation. Fixing the cause outside is the first step.

Can you unclog gutters while it's still raining?

In light rain, often yes, and it can help us see where water goes. We do not work on ladders during lightning or strong gusts, so in an active thunderstorm we wait until the cell passes. Meanwhile, protect thresholds inside and keep clear of the overflow area.

Do I need bigger gutters if they overflow when clean?

Not necessarily. Adding a downspout, fixing the pitch or adding a valley diverter solves many cases. If the roof area draining to that run is simply more than the gutter can carry in a South Florida downpour, upgrading to a 6-inch or 7-inch seamless gutter is the lasting fix.

Can I clear a clogged downspout from the ground?

Often, yes, once the lightning has passed. If the plug sits in the bottom elbow or the inlet of an underground line, pull off the lower extension or elbow and clear it by hand, then run a garden hose up from below to loosen soft clogs. A plug at the top outlet, where black olive leaves usually mat, needs ladder work, which our crew handles with standoffs.
