Low Ground Along the Dania Cutoff Canal: Where Roof Water Goes

Dania began as a farm settlement called Modello, and in November 1904 its few dozen residents, most of Danish descent, incorporated as the town of Dania, now the oldest city in Broward. After the 1926 hurricane most of Dania seceded from Hollywood and reincorporated, and in 1998 it adopted the name Dania Beach. The 2020 Census counted 31,723 people on this low coastal ground.

Much of the city sits on low ground, and the water table rises close to the surface in the rainy season. A yard that drains fine in March can hold standing water for a day after an August cloudburst. Add a downspout emptying against the foundation and the slab edge, stucco base and landscaping take a beating every storm.

The older housing compounds the problem. Homes near the historic core and west of US 1 often have original fascia, undersized or patched gutters and downspouts that were never extended. Closer to the beach, salt air pits steel fasteners, and king tides push water up the canal and storm drains, so yards near the water drain even more slowly.

What Happens When We Visit a Dania Beach Home After Heavy Rain?

Many Dania Beach calls come in during or right after a downpour, when gutters overflow and water sheets toward the house. When the schedule allows, we fit in same-day make-safe work: clearing the blockage, reattaching a pulled section and pointing each outlet away from the slab.

1. Walk the yard first to see where water pools and which downspouts feed it.
2. Clean the gutters by hand and flush every downspout, checking elbows and any buried line.
3. Test each run with a hose and photograph any seam, corner or end cap that drips.
4. Recommend extensions, splash blocks or a shallow underground line where pooling is persistent.
