Fascia board repair is the fix for a gutter that will not stay put. If hangers keep pulling loose, the gutter leans away from the house, or paint is blistering along the roof edge, the board behind the gutter is probably soft. Screws cannot hold in punky wood, and no amount of re-pitching solves that. The wood has to come out.
Southern Gutters FL does the carpentry and the gutter work together, which is the advantage of calling a gutter crew for this job. We take the gutter down, replace only the rotted lengths, finish the new wood and hang the gutter back up with stainless hardware. It is part of our soffit and fascia services, and most single-side repairs are done in one trip.
Signs you need rotted fascia repair, and how we confirm it
From the ground, walk the roof edge on a sunny morning. Rot rarely shows all at once; it appears as a cluster of small clues in one stretch of trim.
- Paint that bubbles, peels or turns gray in one area while the rest of the trim looks fine
- A gutter that dips or leans outward between two hangers
- Dark streaks or green growth on the face of the board below the gutter line
- Wood crumbs, termite frass or mud tubes on the driveway or window sills under the eave
- Open seams at the corner where two fascia boards meet
On the ladder we confirm with a screwdriver. Healthy pine resists the tip, while rotted wood lets it sink in under thumb pressure. We test at every hanger, at corners and at joints, then mark each failing length so you can see exactly what needs replacing. In South Florida the soft spots cluster in predictable places: under a leaking corner miter, beside a downspout outlet and wherever a tile valley dumps water.

What a fascia board repair visit includes from start to finish
The point of a fascia repair is a board that holds a loaded gutter through another decade of afternoon storms. That takes more than swapping wood, so the scope covers the gutter, the water that caused the rot and the finish that protects the new lumber. Before the work begins, you get a written estimate showing each marked length and the finish you picked. If the gutter is old or sectional, the estimate also prices a new seamless run as an option, so you can compare before anything comes down. The visit itself includes:
- Probing every hanger, corner and joint and marking each failing length
- Lowering the gutter and setting it aside, or hauling it off if it is being replaced
- Cutting out rot to the nearest rafter tail and fitting new primed boards
- Adding or extending a gutter apron behind the gutter
- Aluminum wrap or exterior paint, then re-hanging, re-pitching and resealing the gutter

Why one crew for wood and gutters pays off
When a carpenter and a gutter installer split this job, the gutter often goes back up on the old hanger holes or at the wrong pitch. Our family-owned crew does both halves in one visit. Chance has owned Southern Gutters FL since about 2020, starting in West Palm Beach and now based in North Lauderdale, and our 54 Google reviews average 4.9 stars. Reviewers keep mentioning painted cut edges, punctual crews and fair value, and several describe jobs finished faster than quoted. The estimate is free, the wood and the gutter sit on one invoice, and we follow up after the next heavy rain.
Patch a section or commit to full fascia board replacement?
We replace only what is rotted whenever the rest of the board is sound. Decay tends to begin at a few points: under a leaking corner miter, behind a downspout outlet, below a roof valley or at a butt joint where water wicked into end grain.
A partial repair means cutting past the soft wood, usually to the nearest rafter tail so the new piece lands on solid framing, and joining old to new with an angled scarf joint that sheds water. Full replacement makes sense when rot shows up at more spots than not along a run, or when the old board is so checked and split that splices would outnumber sound wood.
| Material | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated pine | Strong hold for gutter screws; resists rot and termites | Must dry before painting; can twist if left unfinished |
| Cellular PVC trim | Cannot rot or feed termites; takes paint well | Needs solid framing behind hangers; must be gapped for heat expansion |
| Cedar | Naturally rot-resistant; matches older painted trim | Softer, so gutter fasteners need careful placement |
Whichever board you choose, every cut end is primed before installation, because end grain is where moisture finds its way back in. Each splice also lands on a rafter tail, so seasonal movement cannot flex the joint open.

Fascia and gutter repair handled by one crew
Here is how the work usually unfolds on one side of a house:
- Gutter down. From ladders set with standoffs, we back out the hangers and lower a seamless run in one piece, or in sections if it is already failing.
- Rot out. Damaged fascia is cut back to healthy wood and removed, and we inspect the rafter tails and sheathing edge it was hiding.
- New lumber up. Replacement lengths are cut, primed on all faces and fastened into each rafter tail with stainless screws.
- Water control. We add or extend a gutter apron so runoff lands in the gutter rather than behind it.
- Finish. The new wood is wrapped in aluminum or painted, whichever you chose.
- Gutter back on. Hangers go into fresh wood, the run is re-pitched toward its outlets, and end caps and miters are resealed.
If rafter tails are soft too, we stop and show you before going further. Structural framing repair belongs to a licensed carpenter or roofer, and we say so rather than cover it up. Ask whoever does that work for their county license details and certificate of insurance, and expect a building permit where the city requires one for framing. Live termites are a separate call: pest control companies in Florida are licensed by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and treatment should come before new wood goes up. Replacement fascia and re-hung gutters on Broward and Miami-Dade homes sit inside the Florida Building Code’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so fasteners matter.

Fascia wrap or fascia painting: which finish lasts longer here?
Both work well over healthy wood. The difference is upkeep.
Aluminum fascia wrap
We bend coil aluminum on a brake to fit your board's profile, tuck it up under the drip edge and secure it with color-matched trim nails. It never needs paint, comes in shades that match most gutters and shields the wood from sun and rain. The condition: it must go over dry, sound wood and be detailed so water cannot sit behind it.
Painted fascia
Some owners prefer painted wood, especially on older homes where the trim is part of the character. We prime with an exterior primer and finish with exterior paint matched as closely as possible to your existing trim. Under South Florida sun, plan on repainting every several years.
Small related repairs
If a long-running fascia leak has stained a ceiling near an exterior wall, we can patch and paint a small area of drywall once the leak is stopped. Larger interior water damage should be assessed by a restoration contractor.

What affects the price, and how do you keep new fascia dry?
Fascia work is priced by what the screwdriver finds, so a phone quote would be a guess. Your written quote reflects:
- Total linear feet of rotted board and how many separate spots are affected
- Board material and finish: wrap, paint or both
- Height, roof type and access, especially over pool cages or narrow side yards
- Whether the existing gutter is re-hung or replaced at the same time
- Any soffit work along the same edge
Two other things move the number. Hidden damage, such as rot that runs past the paint line or a termite gallery behind the board, can only be confirmed once the gutter is down, and we show you before the scope grows. Finish timing matters too: painted boards may need dry time before the gutter goes back. Fascia coverage is stated in the estimate, while our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty applies to gutters we install.
To stop rot from returning, fix the cause along with the board. Keep gutters clean through the rainy season, make sure corners and end caps are sealed, and confirm the apron is in place. A leaking gutter repair or a gutter maintenance plan covers most of that. If the gutters sag for reasons beyond the wood, see our sagging gutter repair service, and if soffit along the same edge has failed, aluminum soffit installation can happen on the same visit.

Fascia Board Repair questions, answered
How can I tell if my fascia board is rotted?
Look for peeling or bubbling paint in one area, a gutter that sags or leans away between hangers, dark staining below the gutter, or gaps opening at corners. Up close, press a screwdriver into the board: sound wood resists, rotted wood gives. Termite frass or mud tubes along the eave are another warning. We probe every hanger location during our inspection.
Can you replace only the damaged fascia sections?
Yes, and that is our approach whenever the rest of the board is solid. We cut past the rot to a rafter tail, splice in a new primed length with an angled joint that sheds water, and finish it to match. Full runs are replaced only when decay is widespread enough that patches would outnumber good wood.
Do you paint new fascia to match?
We can. New boards are primed on every face, then either wrapped in color-matched aluminum or painted with exterior paint matched as closely as possible to your existing trim. Older paint fades in the sun, so a fresh section may look slightly brighter at first, and some homeowners choose to repaint the whole run for a uniform finish.
Does fascia rot affect my gutter warranty?
Our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty covers gutters we install. Rot in the wood behind them is not a gutter defect, which is exactly why we inspect and replace soft fascia before hanging new gutters. Hangers driven into rotted boards eventually pull loose no matter how well the gutter is made, so solid wood protects both your home and the installation.
