Hurricane gutter damage repair starts with understanding what the wind did. Hurricane gusts get under the front lip of a gutter, pry it away from the fascia, and work it back and forth until hangers let go. Long runs with wide hanger spacing peel like a zipper, corners split at the miter, and downspouts that were only lightly strapped end up in the neighbor's yard.

Southern Gutters FL repairs and replaces storm-damaged gutters across Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade. We make hazards safe first, photograph everything for your records, and then give you a written plan that distinguishes what can be saved from what truly needs replacing. This page is part of our emergency and storm gutter repair services.

Wind damaged gutters: reading what the storm did

The pattern of damage tells us a lot. A run that leans outward at the top but is still attached usually means hangers bent or pulled partly out of the fascia. A run that is flattened or kinked usually took a hit from a limb or debris. A corner that split open and dropped at one end means the miter failed first and the rest followed.

  • Peeled outward: hangers loosened, fascia may be split at the screw holes.
  • Kinked or creased: impact from a branch, coconut or loose roofing material.
  • Split miter: sealant and rivets gave way under wind load.
  • Downspout gone or crushed: straps too few or fastened into soft stucco.
  • End caps missing: wind and water pressure popped a poorly sealed cap.

Why one house loses its gutters and the neighbor does not usually comes down to fastening: spikes and ferrules set three or four feet apart let gusts lift the lip between them. Falling coconuts crease runs from the top, and dragged palm fronds pop end caps.

Before repairs: safety first, then gutter insurance claim photos

Stay off the ladder until the wind has dropped and you have checked for power lines touching anything metal. Then take your own photos from the ground, because the first record matters most.

  1. Stand back and photograph each side of the house so the full gutter line is visible.
  2. Zoom in on each damaged spot: torn hangers, split corners, dents, missing downspouts.
  3. Photograph any debris that caused the damage before it is moved, such as a fallen limb across a run.
  4. Keep damaged pieces that have fallen; adjusters sometimes want to see them.
  5. Write down the date and the storm name.

When our crew arrives, we add our own photo set keyed to each elevation, plus measurements and a written description. That gives you a clean package for your insurer. Our part is documenting the damage accurately; the coverage decision is the insurance company's.

Florida rules that shape a hurricane gutter repair

The Florida Department of Financial Services consumer guide explains that you generally pay one hurricane deductible per calendar year, provided later storms are claimed with the same insurer group. State law also sets a deadline for reporting a hurricane claim, so ask your insurer for the current window. On the building side, Broward and Miami-Dade sit inside the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, and replacing whole runs may need a permit from your city or county building department. Ask any contractor for license details you can verify with the Florida DBPR and a certificate of insurance.

Tropical storm gutter repair vs. damage from a major hurricane

A tropical storm rarely peels whole runs off a well-fastened system. What it does is drop a lot of rain fast, overload gutters already half full of debris, and knock down fronds and limbs. Tropical storm gutter repair is usually localized: one bent section, a downspout off its straps, an overflow that soaked the fascia.

A strong hurricane is a different job. Damage tends to be spread along whole elevations, fascia is more often compromised, and replacement of full runs becomes more common. The post-storm debris clean-out is often the first step, because we cannot judge a gutter buried under branches.

Debris often has to be cleared before the real extent of gutter damage can be judged.

Do hail damage gutters really happen in South Florida?

Hail is less common here than in the Plains, but strong summer thunderstorms do produce it. On aluminum gutters it shows up as a scatter of small round dents along the top lip and front face, often with matching marks on window screens, AC fins and car roofs. It is mostly cosmetic unless the dents are deep enough to change how the gutter drains.

Because hail is often part of a wider storm claim, it is worth photographing even if you do not plan to repair the gutters right away.

Storm damage gutter repair: straighten, splice or replace?

We prefer repair where repair will hold. Aluminum that has been creased loses strength at the crease, so not everything can be bent back. Here is how we usually decide.

Typical decisions on hurricane-damaged gutters
DamageUsual fixNotes
Leaning run, hangers pulledRe-hang with new hidden hangersFascia checked first; soft wood gets repaired
Shallow dents, no creasesLeave or straightenCosmetic if water still flows to the outlet
Sharp crease or kinkReplace the section or runSeamless runs usually replaced end to end to avoid new joints
Split miterReseal and rivet, or new cornerDepends on how far the split runs
Missing or crushed downspoutNew downspout and strapsExtra straps on exposed corners

When a full run must go, we roll-form a new seamless section on site and match the color as closely as available finishes allow, the same approach as our gutter replacement service. Rotted fascia behind it goes through fascia board repair before anything is re-hung.

What does hurricane gutter damage repair include, from make-safe to final photos?

A hurricane repair is usually two jobs on two different days. First comes the make-safe: anything hanging, swinging or dumping water against the wall is taken down, re-fastened or pointed away before the next squall line. The permanent repair follows the adjuster's visit, if you are filing a claim, and the arrival of material. In between you hold our photos, measurements and a written scope broken out by elevation, so insurer, roofer and owner read the same document.

  • Make-safe of hanging or detached sections, with removed pieces kept for the adjuster
  • Photos keyed to each elevation and measured damaged lengths
  • Hanger, miter and end cap checks on runs that look fine from the lawn
  • A fascia probe behind every pulled hanger
  • Straightening, re-hanging or new seamless runs and downspouts
  • A water test and after photos for your claim file
  1. Triage by hazard: a ground walk of every side, checking for service lines near metal.
  2. Photos before touching: wide shots, then close-ups with a tape in frame for scale.
  3. Make-safe: hanging sections come down or get temporary hangers.
  4. Measure and quote: damaged lengths and fascia condition go into a written scope.
  5. Repair or replace: ladders with standoffs, hidden hangers on stainless screws at closer spacing, new runs from our roll former.
  6. Water test and final photos: a hose run through every repaired section, then the after set.

Typical before

Before hurricane gutter repair: wind-bent seamless gutter run hanging from the eave of a one-story stucco home
Typical condition before a hurricane repair: a creased run hanging off its hangers, a loose downspout and storm litter along the wall.

Typical after

After hurricane gutter repair: new seamless gutter and strapped downspout on a one-story stucco home
After a hurricane gutter repair: a new seamless run on fresh hangers and a re-strapped corner downspout, with the storm debris cleared.

How are hurricane gutter damage repair calls scheduled?

After a hurricane, demand outruns every crew in the region for a while. We sort calls by danger, not by who called first: sections hanging over doors, drives and walkways go first, then active water intrusion, then everything else. We will tell you where you stand and an honest window, without promising an arrival time we cannot keep.

Permanent repairs often wait on the adjuster and on materials, which is normal. Make-safe work keeps things stable in the meantime.

What moves the cost of hurricane gutter repair

We write every storm quote after the photos and measurements, never from a phone description, and the same variables show up on nearly all of them. The biggest is how many linear feet were damaged and whether those runs can be straightened and re-hung or must be formed new. Fascia comes next: hangers that tore out of rotten wood mean carpentry before any gutter goes back up. Height and roof type matter because a two-story barrel-tile eave takes more ladder setup and slower work than a single-story shingle edge. Color matching adds steps when the original finish has faded or is no longer stocked, and some owners replace a whole elevation so it matches. Downspouts, straps and haul-away of crushed sections are counted separately, and make-safe is itemized apart from the permanent work, which helps when an insurer treats the two differently.

Why homeowners hand us the storm file

Southern Gutters FL has worked South Florida storm seasons since 2020, first out of West Palm Beach, then Oakland Park and now North Lauderdale. Chance still runs it as a family business, and the 54 Google reviews behind our 4.9 average most often tag quality, value and responsiveness. On a hurricane job that shows up in practical ways: the phone is answered Monday to Friday, the scope is written down, and new seamless runs we hang carry our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty. We also take the small storm jobs, like one torn downspout, that bigger outfits pass on.

Hurricane Gutter Damage Repair questions, answered

Does homeowners insurance cover hurricane gutter damage?

It depends on your policy, and the decision belongs to your insurer. Many Florida policies carry a separate hurricane deductible, often a percentage of dwelling coverage, so gutter damage alone may fall below it, while gutter damage alongside roof or fascia damage may be part of a larger claim. We provide photos and a written description; your agent or adjuster can explain coverage.

Should I wait for the adjuster before repairs?

Document first, then prevent further damage. Most policies expect reasonable steps to stop more damage, such as removing a hanging section or redirecting water, and keeping receipts. For permanent replacement, check with your insurer first. Our make-safe photos and notes show what was there before we touched it.

Can bent gutters be straightened or must they be replaced?

Shallow bends and dents can often be straightened or left alone if water still drains properly. Sharp creases weaken aluminum and usually mean replacing the section. On seamless systems we often replace a damaged run end to end so we do not add new joints that could leak later.

How do you prioritize calls after a hurricane?

By hazard. Sections hanging over driveways, doors and walkways come first, followed by situations where water is getting inside, then cosmetic and slow-leak repairs. We keep callers informed about where they are in the queue and do not promise fixed arrival times during storm recovery.
